Minister Outlines Debt Treatment Experience at Paris Forum

KEYIR NEWS:- State Minister of Finance Eyob Tekalign (PhD) participated in the 12th Paris Forum, where he presented Ethiopia’s engagement under the G20 Common Framework for debt treatment.

During the session, Eyob discussed the ongoing sovereign debt treatment process, citing Ethiopia’s experience as a case study. He noted the collaborative approach adopted by stakeholders and conveyed the country’s position on enhancing the process.

Eyob acknowledged procedural challenges and proposed measures to improve future engagements. Among the recommendations were the establishment of a standardized Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a predictable timeline for negotiations. He argued that such measures would facilitate timely access to debt relief for countries under financial strain.

The State Minister also underscored the need for greater transparency between debtor and creditor countries. He called for an equitable distribution of responsibility among involved parties, indicating that the effectiveness of debt restructuring rests on shared commitment.

Ethiopia is currently undergoing debt treatment under the Common Framework. In March 2025, the country reached an Agreement in Principle with its Official Creditors Committee. Finalization of the MoU is pending.

The Paris Forum is convened annually by the Paris Club in collaboration with the G20 Presidency. It serves as a platform for dialogue among creditor and debtor nations, multilateral institutions, and other stakeholders focused on sovereign debt restructuring and resolution.

The forum continues to serve as a venue for policy exchange on debt sustainability and coordination among actors in the international financial system.
