Parliament Presses Transport Ministry Over Overcharging, Safety Failures

KEYIR NEWS:- Lawmakers have pressed the Ministry of Transport & Logistics to address persistent overcharging in the public transport sector and the alarming rate of traffic accidents.

During a review of the Ministry’s 11-month performance for the 2017 fiscal year, members of the Parliament called for urgent corrective action and multi-sectoral collaboration.

Citing mounting complaints from citizens, MPs urged the Ministry to rein in fare inflation and ensure service equity, particularly at congested intercity terminals. They also expressed concern over the substandard condition of many rural-bound transport stations and called for comprehensive upgrades.

Transport Minister Alemu Sime (PhD) acknowledged the systemic challenges plaguing the sector, including corruption, weak vehicle inspections, and poor driver conduct.

He said modernisation efforts are underway to improve service delivery and restore public trust, citing the Qalati terminal as a new model for integrated, citizen-friendly infrastructure.

Alemu also confirmed the anticipated completion of the Mojo Dry Port expansion within months, expected to ease logistical bottlenecks.

However, he emphasised that lasting improvements will require coordinated action across agencies to address entrenched inefficiencies.
