KEYIR NEWS:- A lobby group representing the plastic manufacturers has requested a five-year extension to comply with a new federal law banning the production and use of single-use plastic bags.
The Solid Waste Management and Disposal Proclamation requires producers to cease operations related to single-use plastics within six months. The law aims to address concerns over waste management and public health.
The Ethiopian Plastic and Rubber Manufacturers Association stated that the transition period is not sufficient for producers to shift to alternative materials. Industry representatives said the sector relies on recycling and helps reduce the need for imported raw materials.
Manufacturers warn the new regulation could lead to factory closures and job losses. Some facilities recently imported machinery for plastic production that cannot be repurposed under the new law. Others said operations may be suspended due to a lack of alternatives and preparation time.
Producers of biodegradable materials have seen a rise in demand. Some companies that manufacture paper bags report increased orders but face raw material shortages and limited financing options. They also note that awareness of alternative packaging remains low among consumers.
Authorities said support would be provided to help affected manufacturers transition to substitute materials. Officials emphasized the importance of environmental protection alongside continued industrial activity.
Plastic use in the country has increased in recent years. National data indicates that consumption is rising steadily, with urban centers showing higher levels of use compared to rural areas.
