KEYIR NEWS:- Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has described the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a “blessing” for the region, calling for renewed cooperation with downstream nations ahead of its formal inauguration set for September.
Addressing members of the Parliament on July 3, 2025, the Prime Minister confirmed the dam’s construction is now complete, with preparations underway for an official launch following the end of the summer season.
“The construction of the Renaissance Dam is now complete,” he said.
“We are preparing to officially inaugurate it. While there are some who believe it should be disrupted before its inauguration, we are committed to moving forward.”
Framing the GERD as a shared asset rather than a geopolitical wedge, Abiy emphasised its role in promoting regional development and clean energy generation.
“The Renaissance Dam is a blessing. It is a source of shared development and clean energy, from which all nations in the region can benefit.”
In response to persistent concerns from Egypt and Sudan, Abiy dismissed claims that the dam has reduced water availability downstream.
“The Aswan Dam in Egypt has not lost even a single litre of water due to GERD,” he noted.
“A prosperous and developed Ethiopia poses no threat to its neighbours.”
The Prime Minister underscored Ethiopia’s commitment to dialogue, negotiation, and collective progress, advocating for a future defined by mutual benefit.
“We envision a future of cooperation, where we share energy and water, and where collective development brings lasting peace and progress.”
He extended a formal invitation to the governments of Egypt and Sudan, along with all relevant stakeholders, to attend the upcoming inauguration ceremony.
The GERD, a cornerstone of Ethiopia’s developmental ambition, now enters a decisive diplomatic chapter, one the government hopes will pivot from contention to constructive engagement across the Nile basin.
