KEYIR NEWS:- Eritrea has firmly rejected a UN resolution on its human rights record, calling it biased and politically driven.
Habtom Zerai, Chargé d’Affaires at Eritrea’s UN Mission, dismissed Resolution A/HRC/59/L.7 as a “tool of coercion.”
He said the resolution recycles “false claims” pushed by the same actors for over a decade.
“It was never about rights. It’s meant to punish Eritrea for resisting external pressure,” Zerai said.
He accused the drafters of blocking Eritrea’s efforts to work under UN Agenda Item 10.
Zerai called this “hypocrisy” and warned it risks damaging the Council’s credibility.
He described the Special Rapporteur’s mandate as biased and lacking fairness.
“The mechanism is not neutral. It promotes one-sided reports and staged events,” he said.
He claimed these efforts protect anti-government groups under the cover of activism.
“These moves are part of a wider smear campaign,” he added.
He said they aim to isolate Eritrea and punish its independence.
Zerai made it clear Eritrea won’t engage with what he called “unfair mechanisms.”
“Not in the past 13 years, not today, not ever,” he declared.
Eritrea has long been at odds with the UN over rights issues.
Critics cite abuses and lack of freedoms; Eritrea says the claims are false and political.
