National Interest Must Transcend Partisan Differences, Says Berhanu Nega

Professor Berhanu Nega, leader of the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice (EZEMA) Party, asserted that political ideology should not impede collective efforts to safeguard  the overarching national interests.

Speaking during the party’s 2nd Regular General Assembly, held over two days beginning 04 July 2025 under the banner “We Compete with Ideas; We Unite for the Country,” Professor Berhanu called for a paradigm shift in Ethiopia’s political culture, one grounded in the interests of citizens rather than entrenched partisanship.

He stressed the need for constructive collaboration among political actors, irrespective of ideological differences, to advance national priorities.

“Ideological divergence among parties is natural,” he noted, “but it should not hinder unified action when it comes to matters of national significance.”

Professor Berhanu further remarked that EZEMA is actively cooperating with the ruling party without compromising its ideological stance, underscoring a pragmatic approach to governance and national development.

As part of the Assembly’s sidelines, party executives and members participated in the flagship Green Legacy Programme, planting saplings at Sheger Park in Addis Ababa’s Gulele Sub-city.

The initiative symbolised their commitment to environmental stewardship and intergenerational responsibility.

It is to be recalled that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) officially launched this year’s Green Legacy Campaign on 27 June 2025 under the theme “Renewing Through Planting.”
