KEYIR NEWS - In a poignant display of post-conflict recovery, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) has handed over 79 fully equipped ambulances to its Tigray regional branch, marking the conclusion of a major humanitarian support initiative.
Held in the presence of Tigray’s Interim President Lt. General Tadesse Worede, senior cabinet members, and ERCS Secretary General Abera Lulessa, the ceremony underscored a crucial step toward rebuilding essential health services in the region. The donation forms part of a larger consignment of 200 ambulances provided through the support of an international humanitarian partner.
The new fleet is set to replace vehicles destroyed or rendered inoperable during the conflict in northern Ethiopia. More than a symbolic gesture, the handover is expected to significantly enhance emergency response in remote and underserved communities, where access to healthcare remains precarious.
“This is not just a donation—it’s a restoration of hope and health access for millions,” said Lt. General Tadesse, expressing gratitude for the Red Cross’ steadfast support throughout the humanitarian crisis.
Secretary General Abera Lulessa reaffirmed the Society’s commitment to equitable healthcare delivery, particularly in regions emerging from devastation. “Our mission is to ensure that no life is lost for lack of transport to medical care,” he said, adding that the Society will continue to prioritise vulnerable populations in its recovery agenda.
As the ambulances roll into operation, the initiative is not only expected to save lives but also to rebuild public confidence in essential services, contributing to Tigray’s broader path toward healing and institutional normalcy.
