Safaricom Ethiopia Showcases Purpose-Driven Strategy at Vodacom Group Leadership Conference

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Safaricom Ethiopia Executive Leadership team participated in the annual Vodacom Group Leadership Conference, held this week in Johannesburg, joining senior leaders from across the continent to align on strategy and exchange best practices in creating sustainable business impact.

Under the theme “Leading with Purpose,” the two-day conference brought together top executives from Vodacom’s various markets to review progress and explore purpose-driven growth initiatives.

During the keynote session, Wim Vanhelleputte, CEO of Safaricom Ethiopia, and Andualem Admassie (PhD), Chief External Affairs Officer, shared insights into how purpose is being embedded into the company’s operational execution in Ethiopia.

The presentation highlighted three flagship initiatives. The first showcased Safaricom Ethiopia’s effort to bridge the digital divide through the donation of 750 laptops, routers, and free internet access to underserved public schools, empowering students with digital learning opportunities.

This was followed by a case study on the company’s collaboration with Mekedonia Humanitarian Association, where a 10 million birr contribution, AirFiber connectivity, and MPESA ETHIOPIA integration supported a nationwide fundraising campaign for elderly and disabled citizens.

In its sustainability segment, Safaricom Ethiopia reported tangible progress toward environmental targets, with 77pc of self-built telecom sites now powered by renewable grid energy, resulting in a 60pc reduction in diesel consumption.

The session underscored Safaricom Ethiopia’s commitment to connecting communities, enabling dignity, and building a more sustainable digital ecosystem.

Executives emphasised that such initiatives are not peripheral but central to the company’s strategy as it continues scaling operations in one of Africa’s fastest-growing telecom markets.
