Antananarivo – Madagascar has assumed the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Council of Ministers for the 12–14 August session, setting the tone for the forthcoming 45th SADC Summit.
Operating under the theme “Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation and Energy Transition”, the Council will deliberate on strategies to accelerate regional economic integration and resilience.
The handover positions Madagascar at the centre of policy coordination across the bloc’s 16 member states, with a focus on sustainable development and cross-border collaboration.
As one of Africa’s eight recognised Regional Economic Communities (RECs), SADC is a key pillar of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, serving as a driver of industrial growth, agricultural modernisation, and renewable energy adoption.
The summit’s outcomes are expected to align regional priorities with continental ambitions, reinforcing the role of RECs as indispensable engines of Africa’s integration and socio-economic transformation.
