KEYIR NEWS - The University of Gondar has paid tribute to the legacy of United States President Harry S. Truman by naming its Main Library at the Atse Tewodros Campus the Truman Library.
The dedication, unveiled on 6 August 2025, coincided with the institution’s 70th anniversary and the centenary of its Teaching Hospital, marking a moment of historic reflection on Ethiopia’s enduring ties with the United States.
The naming recognises President Truman’s pivotal role in launching the Point Four International Cooperation Programme in 1949, a groundbreaking initiative in global development.
Under this programme, the Gondar Public Health College and Training Centre was established in 1954, laying the foundation for what has since grown into the distinguished University of Gondar.
The institution is today celebrated for its contributions to medical education, public health, and community service, not only in Ethiopia but across Africa.
The ceremony underscored the long-standing collaboration between Ethiopia and the United States in the fields of education, health, and social development.
American support through the Point Four initiative significantly strengthened Ethiopia’s capacity to train health professionals and expand access to modern healthcare, achievements that continue to benefit generations.
Speaking at the commemoration, representatives emphasised that the dedication of the Truman Library symbolises both a tribute to history and a commitment to the future.
It highlights how shared investments in knowledge and public service can yield transformative, long-lasting impact.
As Ethiopia and the United States celebrate this milestone, both partners reaffirmed their determination to build upon seven decades of cooperation, advancing educational excellence, healthcare innovation, and sustainable development.
The Truman Library thus stands not only as a monument to the past but as a beacon of the enduring partnership between the two nations.
