KEYIR NEWS - The construction of Bishoftu International Airport, Ethiopian Airlines’ flagship expansion project, is moving ahead, with the facility expected to become a major hub for global flights once completed.
Originally slated to begin international service in 2030, the project has faced delays, with completion now projected within five years of the original timeline.
Ethiopian Airlines first announced the plan in the 2024/25 fiscal year, positioning the airport as a cornerstone of its growth strategy.
According to the airline’s chief executive, preparations for relocating nearby farmers to newly built housing are nearing completion.
Securing financing for the final phases, including the aircraft terminal and other key infrastructure, remains a top priority.
Once finished, Bishoftu International Airport is expected to relieve congestion at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, provide state-of-the-art passenger and cargo facilities, and solidify Ethiopian Airlines’ role as Africa’s largest carrier and a leading global player.
