KEYIR NEWS - Ethiopia and the European Union have teamed up in a new €120 million deal aimed at giving millions more people electricity and faster internet.
The agreement, signed during the African Climate Change Conference in Addis Ababa, is part of the Global Renewable, Integrated, Sustainable Energy and Digitalization (RISED) initiative. Funding will come from the EU, the French Development Agency (AFD), and Ethiopian Electric Power.
According to Ministry of Finance, the project is set to light up 4 million homes with electricity and bring mobile broadband to 12 million people by 2030. It’s also expected to cut power blackouts in half and stop 150,000 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere every year.
Beyond the numbers, the deal is seen as a big step forward for Ethiopia’s green growth push. By combining clean energy with digital tools, the country hopes to attract more investment, create jobs, and make daily life easier for ordinary citizens, from powering schools and hospitals to helping farmers access better information.
For the EU, the partnership fits into its wider Global Gateway strategy, which focuses on supporting clean energy and digital development across Africa. Officials say it’s about showing that African-led climate solutions deserve global backing.
