GERD Expected to Generate One Billion Dollars Annually, Says Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed

KEYIR NEWS - Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) announced that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is projected to generate more than One billion Dollars in annual revenue, not only from electricity exports but also from tourism, aquaculture, and related services.

Speaking during a national address, the Prime Minister emphasized that the dam represents more than an infrastructure project, it is a symbol of Ethiopia’s resilience and ambition.

He highlighted that, beyond power generation, the dam’s surrounding ecosystem will host tourism, fish farming, and other wealth-creating ventures that could cover its construction cost within five to seven years.

The end of the myth that the Abay River is merely a stream that passes without serving its people is a victory to be told in every household,” Abiy said, describing GERD as a national triumph.

He urged Ethiopians to take pride in the project and to share its story with future generations, underscoring its role in strengthening the country’s sovereignty and development path.

This is a joint effort to build wealth and to hand over a stronger nation to our children,” he declared.

The Prime Minister also noted that GERD marks only one of several transformative milestones Ethiopia intends to achieve.

He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to seize opportunities in the national interest without compromise, stressing that Ethiopia’s trajectory toward prosperity will continue.

Abiy further called on Ethiopians from across the country to visit the dam, framing it as both a source of pride and a testament to what collective national determination can achieve.
