Ethiopian Airlines Signs MoU with Chapa to Enhance Digital Payment Options

Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chapa, a leading Ethiopian fintech company, to strengthen digital payment systems and improve customer convenience.

The agreement was signed by Ato Hailemelekot Mamo, Deputy CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, and the founders of Chapa at a ceremony held yesterday.

According to the MoU, Chapa will integrate its payment platform with Ethiopian Airlines’ online booking system, enabling customers to purchase tickets directly through the airline’s website using multiple payment options, including local and international digital channels.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ato Hailemelekot Mamo stated that the partnership would make it easier for passengers to buy tickets through a unified and seamless platform, reflecting the airline’s continued investment in digital transformation.

“Our collaboration with Chapa not only enhances customer convenience but also supports the growth of local technology companies,” he said.

Chapa’s CEO, Nael Hailemariam, expressed his excitement over the agreement, noting that it allows Ethiopian Airlines customers to make payments easily using only their ATM card number, without the need for additional devices.

He added that Chapa’s broader vision is to create a system that enables Ethiopians to purchase any product or service using technology, promoting a cashless and digitally connected economy.

Founded four years ago by two Ethiopian entrepreneurs, Chapa has grown rapidly and currently employs over 60 people, according to reports by ABC.
