ADDIS ABABA:- Ambassador Massinga held high-level discussions yesterday with Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr Mekdes Daba, focusing on the government’s ongoing response to the Marburg virus outbreak in the country’s southern region. The meeting underscored the gravity of the public-health challenge and the swift measures Ethiopia has taken to contain the threat.
Ambassador Massinga commended the Ethiopian authorities for their rapid mobilisation, coordinated surveillance, and decisive intervention to curb further transmission. He emphasised that the United States “stands firmly alongside Ethiopia” in its efforts to safeguard communities and prevent the outbreak from escalating.
Dr Mekdes outlined the Ministry’s intensified containment strategies, including community sensitisation, emergency preparedness, and strengthened laboratory diagnostics. Both sides reiterated the importance of sustained cooperation, transparent information-sharing, and bolstered technical support to ensure an effective national response.
The U.S. government reaffirmed its commitment to providing assistance aimed at ending the outbreak swiftly, protecting lives, and reinforcing Ethiopia’s broader health-security capacities. The meeting signalled a renewed partnership at a critical moment, as Ethiopia continues to navigate the challenges posed by the Marburg virus.
