KEYIR NEWS - Ethiopia has promoted four senior Defence Force officers to the rank of full general in a high-level military reshuffle approved by President Taye Atsekeslassie on the recommendation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The officers elevated to the highest rank are Lt. Gen. Alemshet Degfe, Lt. Gen. Desta Abche, Lt. Gen. Yimer Mekonnen, and Lt. Gen. Driba Mekonnen. The promotions reflect both recognition of long service and the government’s effort to strengthen the leadership of the national army.
Alongside these appointments, Maj. Gen. Fefyalew Amde Tessema and Maj. Gen. Kindu Gezu Tegen were promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. President Taye also advanced 17 senior officers to the rank of major general and approved the promotion of 43 colonels to brigadier general.
The promotions come at a time when Ethiopia continues to modernize and restructure its defence sector. Analysts note that elevating officers to higher command levels enhances operational readiness and reinforces institutional stability within the armed forces.
Military officials said the promotions also aim to recognize distinguished service and dedication. The newly promoted generals are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Ethiopia’s defence strategy, reinforcing national security, and contributing to peacekeeping missions in the region.
The Defence Force remains a key pillar of Ethiopia’s sovereignty and stability. With the latest round of promotions, the government has underlined its commitment to bolstering the leadership capacity of its armed forces while motivating officers through recognition of merit and service.
